01 / Origin The origin story
I was tired of switching between my WHOOP app, my Withings app, and Apple Health just to understand how my body was actually doing.
I wear a WHOOP every day. I step on my Withings scale every morning. But getting the full picture meant jumping between apps, exporting CSVs, and squinting at disconnected data. None of the apps talked to each other, and none of them showed me what I actually wanted to see, which was how my recovery, sleep, weight, and body composition moved together over months, not days.
So I built the dashboard I wanted to use myself. That's VitalTrends.
02 / Who I am Who I am
I'm Daniel Andrade. I'm an electrical engineer turned software builder, based in Lisbon, Portugal. Before VitalTrends, I spent years building Hotspotty, a product used by more than 300,000 people across hundreds of IoT and wireless networking teams.
VitalTrends is different. It's smaller, more personal, and built for an audience of one before anyone else. I use it every single morning, and I ship the things I wish were better.
03 / The tech The tech and the philosophy
Under the hood, VitalTrends connects to your devices via official OAuth flows and listens for real-time webhooks from WHOOP and Withings. For Apple Health, there's a native iOS companion app that syncs HealthKit data in the background, since Apple doesn't offer a public OAuth for it. On top of that, a self-healing sync quietly detects gaps and backfills them, so you never see a broken chart or a missing day.
"I'd rather ship a tool that costs the price of a coffee and is built to last than chase a growth curve."
On privacy, the rule is simple. I store my own health data in VitalTrends. I treat yours the same way I treat mine. OAuth tokens are encrypted at rest, your data is strictly scoped to your account, and nothing is sold, shared, or used for ads. There is no advertising business here. There is no data business here. There is only the dashboard.
VitalTrends is not VC-backed. There is no growth team, no cohort analysis, no pressure to pivot. It's a solo project I plan to run for a long time, priced to be sustainable, not to maximize revenue.
04 / Principles How I build this
-
A
Useful before beautiful, but beautiful too.
Every chart has to earn its place. If it doesn't change a decision, it doesn't ship.
-
B
Your data, your keys.
Everything exportable as CSV. One-click delete. Nothing proprietary about your data.
-
C
Ship in public, fix fast.
Bug reports get answered by me, usually same day. Feature requests sometimes become features.
-
D
No growth hacks.
No dark patterns, no artificial scarcity, no fake social proof. Just the product.
I'm building this in public. If you have an idea, a bug report, or just want to say hello, reach out.
